Special Note:

Magnesium stearate in supplements

Magnesium stearate (magnesium palmitate) is a compound added to many supplements during manufacture, usually at around 5% by weight. It has a greasy texture that helps production machinery to run smoothly, and also assists with binding the tablet ingredients when they are pressed. Magnesium stearate encases the ingredients of supplement tablets and the indigestible coating greatly reduces absorbtion by the body of other compounds in the tablet.

Stearic acid used in the manufacture of magnesium stearate is made by hydrogenating cottonseed oil, and may contain relatively high levels of pesticide residue. There is also some evidence that stearates may suppress the action of T-cells, a key component of the immune system (Ref. "Molecular basis for the immunosuppressive action of stearic acid on T cells", Journal of Immumology, 1990.)

In October 2005, the chemical manufacturer ScienceLab.com issued a Material Safety Data Sheet on magnesium stearate stating that the substance "presented a hazardous health issue when ingested orally, causing damage to the liver". Under California Proposition 65, magnesium stearate was found to "cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm."

This compound prevents or slows down the absorbtion of other supplement ingredients by up to 65%, and may be immunosuppressive and toxic to the liver, and may even be carcinogenic, yet is used in the production of 90% of supplements as is convenient for manufacturers to do so. You are advised to avoid products that contain this compound, as in addition to potential toxic effects, the presence of stearates will severely compromise the value of other ingredients.
