Saccharin
Saccharine is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners and, largely because of the bitter after-taste and some bad
press, it has now largely been replaced by newer (and cheaper) sweeteners such as aspartame.
In tests saccharin was found to cause bladder cancer in male rats. and it is considered a possible carcinogen by
the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the US, foods that contain saccharin must have a label
warring that it may be hazardous to your health and that it has caused cancer in laboratory animals.
Unfortunately, the replacements for saccharin are far more dangerous than anything studies and experience have
revealed about saccharin itself.
