Selenium


Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that protects vitamin E from degradation. It supports the immune system by destroying free radicals, and aids in the production of antibodies. It is helpful in stroke prevention. It is a component of glutathione peroxidase, protecting tissues from the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid oxidation. Helps protect against arsenic, cadmium and mercury toxicity, and radiation poisoning. Helpful for cystic fibrosis, arthritis, retinal edema, retinal vascular leakage, stroke. Selenium is absorbed through the intestines and stored in the liver, kidney's, and muscles.

FOOD SOURCES

Organically grown nuts, legumes, pulses, whole grains and seeds, fruits, vegetables. Seafood. Selenium is now seriously depleted from most agricultural soils and levels in food are generally less than required.

SUPPLEMENTATION

Selenium ascorbate, selenium amino acid chelate.

SIGNS OF DEFICIENCY

Blindness (cataracts), cardiomyopathy, infertility, mental retardation, nerve disorders, premature aging. There is a clear correlation between low selenium levels and high incidence of cancer.

SIGNS OF TOXICITY

Highly toxic in excess - can be fatal. Symptoms include dizziness, fever, fragile or black fingernails, gastrointestinal upset, inflammation of spinal cord and bone marrow, lethargy, loss of nails or hair or teeth, nausea with no apparent cause, persistent garlic breath or garlic smell on skin, progressive paralysis, rapid breathing, skin problems, metallic taste in mouth.

MINIMUM DAILY REQUIREMENT

55-70mcg approx., dependant on body weight.
