Evening Primrose

(Oenothera biennis)

evening_primrose

Evening Primrose Oil is derived from the seeds of the Yellow Evening Primrose plant, a perennial found originally in North America, now widespread in dry, open places, in fields and along roadsides. The pink, white, or yellow flowers open at dusk, hence the name Evening Primrose. The oil contains 8-10% of the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is essential for healthy skin and overall hormone balance, as well as a healthy cardiovascular system. The anti-inflammatory hormone prostaglandin can only be produced in the presence of GLA.

American Indians used Evening Primrose roots in tea for obesity and bowel pains, and in a pulp for piles or bruises, and on muscles to give strength.
