Silicon


Silicon is needed for bone structure, growth, and connective tissue production of collagen. It is important for healthy nails, skin, hair, and bone formation and to maintain healthy arteries. Prevents cardiovascular disease, counteracts the effects of aluminium toxicity and improves calcium intake.

FOOD SOURCES

Cereal products and whole grains. Also alfalfa, beet, bell pepper, brown rice, dulse, echinacea root, eyebright herb, goldenseal root, green leafy vegetables, soybeans.

SUPPLEMENTATION

Horsetail, silicon dioxide, magnesium trisilicate (antacid), orthosilicic acid. No requirement for supplementation has been demonstrated.

SIGNS OF DEFICIENCY

Deficiency does not occur with a normal Western diet.

SIGNS OF TOXICITY

There are reports of high doses of silicon intake, usually in the form of the antacid magnesium trisilicate, causing siliceous renal calculi. Those prone to kidney stones should probably avoid supplemental silicon.

MINIMUM DAILY REQUIREMENT

Estimated at 20mg approx.
