As early as the 1980s, renowned medical doctor and nutritionist, Dr Emanuel Cheraskin, of Alabama University Medical School, proposed Suggested Optimal Nutritional Allowances (SONAs) based on actual nutritional requirements for good health, in place of Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs). RDAs reflect the lowest levels of vitamins required to prevent outright deficiency symptoms but are generally far too low for for optimal health.
